CHAPTER 11

We couldn’t keep what Jonathan had said about Dori to ourselves. It seemed unfathomable to me that he was seeing her on the sly, yet now he said that she might have killed his wife.

Lucy and I went through the drive-through at the Cup and Bean Coffee Shop and picked up iced coffees for ourselves and Alec, along with some chocolate chunk scones. Arriving empty-handed at the police station would be uncouth.

When we walked into the police station, we were greeted by Jim Taylor at the front desk. He grinned when he saw us. “Hey Allie! How are you doing today?”

I smiled and nodded. “I’m doing great, Jim. You?”

He smiled and then glanced at what was in my hands. It wasn’t much because I had only brought enough for us and Alec. I frequently brought baked goods to the officers here at the station, and they knew when I showed up, chances were good they were going to get a treat. I was going to disappoint them today.

“I would’ve been doing better if I saw those pink bakery boxes you usually bring with you,” he said sadly.

“Oh, I’m so sorry, Jim. I’ve got to get to baking and bring all of you wonderful police officers a treat, don’t I?” I should have tucked the bags that held our scones into my purse. There was no use in torturing the man.

“I told her we needed to bring treats for you all,” Lucy said, throwing me under the bus.

I shot her a look. She had said no such thing; she was just trying to look good to Jim.

Jim sighed dramatically. “That’s okay, Allie. I guess I’ll find a way to make it through my day, anyway.”

“Aw, now I feel bad, Jim. I promise to bring you something in the next few days, okay? Does that make it up to you?” I shot Lucy another look.

He grinned. “Sure, that definitely makes up for it. Double points if you make something chocolate.”

“I will absolutely make you something chocolate then,” I said, grinning back. “Can we go on through?”

He nodded and pressed the buzzer. “Sure, go ahead.”

“Thanks, Jim,” I called over my shoulder as we headed through the door that led to the offices. When the door closed behind us, I glanced at Lucy. “You told me to bring something?”

She shrugged. “I want to make sure that my neighborhood is adequately patrolled, so I’ve got to put in a good word for myself, right?”

I snorted and knocked on Alec’s door. When he hollered for us to come in, I pushed the door open. “Hey!”

He looked up from his laptop. “Hey!”

I chuckled and closed the short distance between us, leaned over, and kissed him. “We brought sustenance.” I set the iced coffee down, and Lucy set down the small bag with his chocolate chunk scone in it.

His eyes widened. “You two are lifesavers. I was just wondering what I could coax out of the vending machine that would be edible.”

“We got here just in time then,” I said as we sat in the chairs in front of his desk.
